Yourself at the registry office of the district of death

The way without us, step by step

The certificate is issued by the registry office that recorded the death. For a death in Neukölln that is the Standesamt Neukölln at Blaschkoallee 32, 12359 Berlin; for Marzahn-Hellersdorf the registry office at Alice-Salomon-Platz 3, 12627 Berlin. All twelve addresses are on the Service-Portal Berlin.

  • Online if you can name the responsible registry office: enter the deceased's details, choose type and number, pay by Visa or Mastercard or wait for the fee notice.
  • In person with ID card or passport. Children, grandchildren or parents show proof of kinship, siblings show a legitimate interest, others a legal interest, e.g. with a certificate of inheritance.
  • If you know where the death was but not the office, use the free online search. A commissioned search costs 20 to 80 euros and takes up to eight months.
  • Costs compared: the registry office charges 12 euros per certificate and 6 euros for each further identical copy. With us the certificate costs 39 euros including this fee. We are not an authority, and the registry office does not give our application priority.

Berlin: place of death, not last home

Died in Mitte, lived in Pankow?

Berlin has twelve registry offices, and the death certificate is issued by the office in whose district the person actually died and which recorded the death. If the hospital is in Mitte and the last home was in Pankow, the Standesamt Mitte is responsible. The last residence is shown in the certificate but does not decide the office.

More about Berlin (2)

The certificate states name, time and place of death, last residence, date and place of birth, marital status and, where applicable, the spouse. The certified copy from the death register also contains corrections of the entry or notes on the marriage. Both cost 12 euros.

Already 30 years after the death the registry office hands the death register to the Landesarchiv Berlin, much earlier than for births at 110 years. For a death before 1996 the archive is therefore already responsible; it issues register extracts instead of certificates.

Questions about the death certificate from Berlin

What does a death certificate cost in Berlin?

12 euros for the German or multilingual death certificate, and also 12 euros for the certified copy from the death register. Each further certificate of the same type in the same application costs 6 euros, so three identical ones cost 24 euros. For social security purposes it is free. At Behördenfix you pay 39 euros per certificate, the fee is included.

Which Berlin registry office issues the death certificate?

The registry office of the district where the person actually died and which recorded the death. The district of the last home does not decide, even if it is in the certificate. Berlin has twelve registry offices. If the office is unknown, the free online search helps, or a search for 20 to 80 euros.

Who may apply for a death certificate in Berlin?

Relatives in direct line such as children, grandchildren and parents, spouses or civil partners, siblings with a legitimate interest, persons with a legal interest and authorised persons. In person, relatives show proof of kinship. Non-relatives prove the legal interest, e.g. with a certificate of inheritance or a land register extract.

Can I order the death certificate online?

Yes, via the Service-Portal Berlin if you can name the responsible registry office. You enter the deceased's details, choose type, number and purpose and pay by credit card or by transfer after the fee notice. The registry office checks the application and sends the certificates by post.

The death was over 30 years ago – where do I turn?

To the Landesarchiv Berlin. 30 years after the death the death register passes there. The archive gives information and register extracts, which authorities accept when certified, but no certificates. You must know the Berlin registry office that originally recorded it. Processing takes one to 16 weeks.
