Requesting it yourself from the Münster registry office

The way without us, step by step

The Münster registry office in the Amt für Bürger- und Ratsservice issues the death certificate if the death occurred in Münster and was registered there. Address: Stadthaus 1, Klemensstraße 10, 2nd floor, 48143 Münster.

  • Online with the city's order form; payment at the end by PayPal or VISA.
  • In person with an appointment via the online booking, room 2.057c. By phone you reach the certificate office at 0251 492-3441, -3442 or -3444, e-mail urkunden@stadt-muenster.de.
  • Applicants must be 16 or older. Siblings and half-siblings credibly show a legitimate interest, other persons a legal interest, or they present a written power of attorney.
  • Costs compared: at the city 15 euros for the first and 9 euros for each further certificate ordered at the same time. With us 39 euros per certificate including the fee. We are not an authority and order with your power of attorney; this does not make the registry office faster.

More about Münster (3)

The Münster registry office keeps death registers of the last 30 years. Older deaths are in registers handed over to the Stadtarchiv Münster. This also applies to the older registers of the registry offices incorporated in 1975, for example for family research, which on its own does not usually establish a legal interest.

For a property in the city area, the Amtsgericht Münster is responsible. According to the court, two corrections there work without a notary: registering the heirs if a notarial will or a certificate of inheritance exists, and deleting an expired right, if necessary by presenting the death certificate.

If the certificate is needed abroad, for example for an inheritance or pension in the home country, the multilingual version helps. According to the Bezirksregierung Münster, it is valid without apostille in the states of the Vienna CIEC Convention such as Austria, Poland or Turkey. Within the EU, Regulation 2016/1191 also exempts death certificates; for other states of the Hague Convention the Bezirksregierung issues the apostille.

Questions about the death certificate from Münster

How much does a death certificate cost in Münster?

The Münster registry office charges 15 euros for the first death certificate. Each further copy you order at the same time costs 9 euros, so three certificates cost 33 euros. If you order more later, the full rate applies again. At Behördenfix you pay 39 euros per certificate, the city's fee is included.

Is the death certificate free for the pension?

Yes. The city of Münster writes that there is an exemption from fees where a law provides for it, for example for statutory pension insurance purposes. State in your order that the certificate is for the pension insurance. For banks, insurers or the probate court, however, the fee applies. A certified extract from the death register also costs 15 euros.

Where do I get a death certificate older than 30 years?

From the Stadtarchiv Münster. The registry office only keeps the death registers of the last 30 years; older ones were handed over to the archive. The older registers of the registry offices incorporated in 1975 are there too. Request copies from these registers directly from the Stadtarchiv, not from the registry office.

May siblings request a death certificate in Münster?

Yes, if they credibly show a legitimate interest. According to the city's service description, this applies to siblings and half-siblings for certificates from the birth and death register. Without proof, the spouse, parents and children of the deceased receive the certificate. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

Can I order the death certificate in Münster online?

Yes, via the registry office's online form with online payment by PayPal or VISA. Alternatively, write to urkunden@stadt-muenster.de or book an appointment online for the certificate office in Stadthaus 1. The city does not state a processing time; the postal route always comes on top.
