Getting the apostille yourself
The way without us, step by step
What matters is who issued the document. Papers from Berlin authorities are certified by the LABO, notary deeds and translations by sworn translators by the Landgericht Berlin II, court decisions by the court itself.
- LABO, Pass- und Ausweisangelegenheiten in Sonderfällen, Friedrichstraße 219, 10969 Berlin, phone 115: in person with a booked appointment, then at once, or by post with the form for postal submission in about two weeks («ca. 2 Wochen»). Return usually only to an address in Germany; abroad, registered post costs 7.45 or 10.10 euros.
- Landgericht Berlin II, Littenstraße office, Littenstraße 12-17, 10179 Berlin: present the original notary deed or translation; payment by court fee stamp or by transfer quoting the file number.
- Costs compared: the LABO charges 19 euros per document, the Landgericht and courts 25 euros. With us 129 euros including these fees. We are not an authority; we are not faster than your own LABO appointment.

No Bezirksregierung: in Berlin the LABO does it
Three offices instead of a Bezirksregierung
Berlin has no Bezirksregierung. The apostille for documents from Berlin authorities is therefore issued by the Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten in Friedrichstraße. At 19 euros per document, issued at once in the appointment, the route is short, but at most three documents are allowed per appointment. Five documents mean two appointments.
More about Berlin (2)Show less
Certificates from state and state-recognised schools first need a pre-certification by the certificate recognition office of the Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Familie, Bernhard-Weiß-Straße 6, 10178 Berlin. For Protestant or Catholic schools there is one more step before that: first the Konsistorium or the Erzbischöfliches Ordinariat, then the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur, then the LABO.
Countries outside the Hague Convention get no apostille but legalisation. For this the LABO issues a pre-certification, also for 19 euros; the legalisation itself comes from the embassy of the destination country. Some countries require a certification by the Bundesverwaltungsamt in between.
Frequently asked questions about the apostille in Berlin
Where do I get an apostille in Berlin?
It depends on the issuer. Documents from Berlin authorities, such as birth or marriage certificates, are certified by the LABO at Friedrichstraße 219. Notary deeds and translations by translators sworn for Berlin courts are certified by the Landgericht Berlin II in Littenstraße. Judgments, court orders and certificates of inheritance are certified by the court that issued them.
What does an apostille cost at the LABO Berlin?
19 euros per certificate or document. Pre-certification for legalisation in countries without the apostille costs the same. For German passports, ID cards and residence permits the LABO charges 5 euros per page. If the document is to be returned abroad, 7.45 or 10.10 euros postage for registered mail is added. At Behördenfix you pay 129 euros inclusive.
How long does an apostille take in Berlin?
At the LABO the apostille is issued at once when you come in person. If you send the documents by post, the LABO states about two weeks («ca. 2 Wochen») for return within Germany. For return abroad the office gives no binding information. The pages of the Landgericht and courts state no processing time.
Can I have several documents certified in one appointment?
At the LABO at most three documents per booked appointment. For more, the LABO says to book more appointments: two for six documents. Each document costs 19 euros. Without an appointment there is the postal route, which takes about two weeks («ca. 2 Wochen») within Germany.
How do I get an apostille for a Berlin school certificate?
In two steps. First the certificate recognition office of the Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Familie, Bernhard-Weiß-Straße 6, issues a pre-certification; the application is a form, the documents come back by post or for collection. Then the LABO issues the apostille for 19 euros. Private schools without state recognition are excluded.
