More about Dortmund (4)Show less
According to the city, what matters is that the death was registered in Dortmund. For the search, the certificate office needs the exact place of death, such as the hospital or care home, not just the district.
The death register at the Standesamt only goes back 30 years, much shorter than the birth register with 110 years. Older deaths, registered since 1 October 1874, are held by the Stadtarchiv Dortmund (city archive).
For pension purposes the certificate costs nothing: enclose the pension office's letter, and the Standesamt sends the certificate directly there. Here too: private ordering services do not speed up the process, says the city. That is why our full price is shown next to the fee.
The death certificate is often needed for the probate court. In Dortmund it is part of the Amtsgericht (local court) at Gerichtsstraße 27-29. You apply there for appointments for certificates of inheritance and disclaimers with a form by post or fax to 0231 926-27090; staff then call you to arrange the appointment.
Questions about the death certificate in Dortmund
Where do I apply for a death certificate in Dortmund?
At the Standesamt Dortmund, certificate office, Friedensplatz 5, if the death was registered in Dortmund. You can order online with PayPal, by phone at doline on 0231 50-13331, informally by post or in person. If the death was more than 30 years ago, the Stadtarchiv is responsible.
Where do I get a death certificate and a certificate of inheritance?
At two offices. The Standesamt issues the death certificate. You apply for the certificate of inheritance at the probate court, in Dortmund at the Amtsgericht, Gerichtsstraße 27-29, if the last habitual residence was in Dortmund. The court gives appointments for this; for a disclaimer, bring your ID and the death certificate.
Who may request a death certificate?
Spouses, ancestors and descendants of the deceased, such as children, grandchildren or parents. Other people, companies and authorities must prove a legal interest. The Standesamt Dortmund names contracts, land register extracts, payment or enforcement orders or a power of attorney from an entitled person. With us you state your relationship when ordering.
How much does a death certificate cost in Dortmund?
15 euros for the first certificate and 7.50 euros for each further one from the same request, according to the Standesamt's fee list as of 1 January 2026. An international death certificate also costs 15 euros. With us one certificate costs 39 euros including the fee.
Is the death certificate free for pension purposes?
Yes. Civil status certificates for pension purposes are free of charge at the Standesamt Dortmund. Send the letter from the office that requires the certificate; the Standesamt then sends it directly to that authority. For this you do not need our service; a direct request to the Standesamt is enough.
Does the appointment request stop the disclaimer deadline?
No. The Amtsgericht Dortmund states expressly that submitting the appointment request does not stop the disclaimer deadline; the disclaimer must be recorded within the six-week period. Bring a valid ID document and a death certificate to the appointment. We do not assess deadlines in individual cases; the probate court or a notary is the right contact for that.
