Yourself at the wedding registry office
The way without us, step by step
Only the registry office that recorded the marriage issues it, as the marriage register is kept there. If you married in Tempelhof-Schöneberg, contact its registry office at John-F.-Kennedy-Platz 1, 10825 Berlin. The Service-Portal Berlin lists the other eleven addresses.
- Online via the Service-Portal if you know the registry office. You choose type, number and purpose and pay by Visa or Mastercard or later by transfer after the fee notice.
- In person with ID card or passport. The couple's children, parents or grandchildren bring proof of kinship, others proof of legal interest or a power of attorney.
- If the registry office is unknown, the state offers a free online search. A commissioned search costs 20 to 80 euros and can take up to eight months.
- Costs compared: the registry office charges 12 euros per marriage certificate and 6 euros for each further identical one. With us the certificate costs 39 euros including this fee. We are not an authority and get no faster appointment.

Berlin: wedding place and notice place differ
Where you married decides
If you give notice in your home district but marry in another, you later order the certificate from the wedding place's registry office. According to the state, only the district where the marriage actually took place counts. Neither residence nor place of notice matters.

Besides the marriage certificate there is the certified copy from the marriage register. It also contains later changes, e.g. dissolution or a change of name, and also costs 12 euros. The certificate itself only states date and place of the wedding, the names before and after and both spouses' dates of birth.
After 80 years the registry office hands the marriage register to the Landesarchiv Berlin. There you get no marriage certificate, but a register extract with the same content. If the certificate is for use abroad, the Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten certifies it with an apostille for 19 euros.
Questions about the marriage certificate from Berlin
What does a marriage certificate cost in Berlin?
12 euros for the German or the multilingual certificate, and also 12 euros for the certified copy from the marriage register. Each further certificate of the same type issued at the same time costs 6 euros. For social security purposes, e.g. Bürgergeld or pension, it is free. At Behördenfix you pay 39 euros, the fee is included.
Which Berlin registry office issues my marriage certificate?
The registry office of the district where you actually married. Your residence and the registry office where you gave notice of marriage do not decide. Berlin has twelve registry offices, one in each district. If only «Berlin» is known as the wedding place, the responsible office can be found for a fee.
Who may apply for a marriage certificate in Berlin?
Both spouses, relatives in direct line such as parents, children, grandparents and grandchildren, persons with a legal interest and persons with a power of attorney. In person, relatives show proof of kinship, e.g. a birth certificate. Non-relatives prove the legal interest, e.g. with a certificate of inheritance or land register extract.
What is the difference between the certificate and the register copy?
The certificate states date and place of the marriage, both spouses' names before and after the wedding and their dates of birth. The certified copy from the marriage register also contains later changes, e.g. a divorce or a change of name. In Berlin both cost 12 euros.
Where do I get a marriage certificate if the marriage was over 80 years ago?
At the Landesarchiv Berlin; marriage registers go there 80 years after the wedding. The archive gives information or register extracts, which authorities accept when certified, but no certificates. You must state which Berlin registry office originally recorded the marriage; «Berlin» alone is not enough.
