Ordering yourself at the district registry office
The way without us, step by step
Only the registry office of the district where the birth was recorded is responsible. One example is the certificate desk of the Standesamt Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf at Otto-Suhr-Allee 96, 10585 Berlin; the addresses of all twelve registry offices are on the Service-Portal page.
- Online via the Service-Portal Berlin, but only if you can state the registry office keeping the register and the register number. Payment by credit card (Visa, Mastercard) or later by transfer after the fee notice.
- In person with ID card or passport. Relatives in direct line bring proof of kinship; anyone coming for someone else brings a power of attorney.
- If you only know the old name of the registry office, you look up today's office online yourself, free of charge. If only «Berlin» is known, the search costs 20 to 80 euros.
- Costs compared: the registry office charges 12 euros per certificate and 6 euros for each further identical one. With us the certificate costs 39 euros including this fee. We are not an authority, and the registry office does not work faster for us.
The details we need
- First name and surname at birth; after a later change of name, today's name too.
- Date and place of birth, i.e. hospital or district, e.g. Neukölln, Spandau or Pankow.

Berlin: twelve registry offices, one per district
The place of birth counts, not where you live
Berlin has no central registry office. Each of the twelve district offices keeps its own birth register, and responsible is the office of the district where the child was actually born. Someone born in a hospital in Mitte who now lives in Reinickendorf therefore orders from the Standesamt Mitte at Parochialstraße 3.
More about Berlin (2)Show less
It gets difficult when nobody knows the district any more. For an old office name there is a free online search. If the papers only say «Berlin», the state finds the responsible registry office for a fee of 20 to 80 euros, and this search can take up to eight months. Only then is the certificate applied for.
If the birth was more than 110 years ago, the register has been handed to the Landesarchiv Berlin. The archive issues no certificates, but register extracts with the same content, which authorities accept in certified form. It states a processing time of one to 16 weeks.
Questions about the birth certificate from Berlin
What does a birth certificate cost in Berlin?
Berlin registry offices charge 12 euros for a German or multilingual birth certificate and also 12 euros for a certified copy from the birth register. Each further certificate of the same type issued at the same time costs 6 euros. For social security purposes, e.g. parental allowance or pension, it is free. At Behördenfix you pay 39 euros, the fee is included.
At which Berlin registry office do I get the certificate?
At the registry office of the district where the person was actually born, regardless of where they live today. Berlin has twelve districts and so twelve registry offices, from Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf to Treptow-Köpenick. Moving within the city changes nothing. The addresses of the certificate desks are on the Service-Portal Berlin page.
Can I apply for the birth certificate online?
Yes, via the Service-Portal Berlin, but only if you can state the responsible registry office and the register number of the birth. You choose type, number and purpose and pay by credit card or later by transfer after the fee notice. The registry office checks the application and sends the certificate by post.
What do I do if I don't know the registry office?
If you only know the former name of the registry office, look up today's office online yourself; it is free. If only «Berlin» is known as the place of birth, you can commission a search. Depending on effort it costs 20 to 80 euros and can take up to eight months. Then you make the actual application.
Where do I get a Berlin birth certificate older than 110 years?
At the Landesarchiv Berlin. After 110 years the birth register passes from the registry office to the archive. The Landesarchiv issues no certificates, but information or register extracts, certified on request. You must know the original registry office. According to the archive, processing takes one to 16 weeks.
