For older marriages, recorded in Dortmund since 1 October 1874, the Stadtarchiv at Märkische Straße 14 is responsible. For family history research, a search fee of 17 to 66 euros per search may apply on top of the certificate fee; so the city asks for precise details.

Children may request their parents' marriage certificate themselves: according to the Standesamt, descendants are entitled to apply. No power of attorney from the parents is needed.

In Dortmund the international version costs the same as the German one, 15 euros. It follows the model of the Vienna CIEC convention; in its 23 contracting states, including Turkey, Poland and Italy, it needs no apostille according to the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg. Here too: private providers do not speed up the process, says the city.

How do I get my parents' marriage certificate?

No. The Standesamt Dortmund expressly asks not to send certificate requests by email, as they would travel unencrypted. Use the online service, phone, a letter or a visit. Questions go via the office's contact form; add a phone number there.

Yes. The Standesamt Dortmund issues an international marriage certificate, fee 15 euros, each further one from the same request 7.50 euros. The online service is called «Eheurkunde / Auszug aus dem Eheregister (auch mehrsprachig)». According to the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg, it is exempt from the apostille for 23 CIEC states.

Do I need an apostille on the marriage certificate in the EU?

According to the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg, since 16 February 2019 the EU apostille regulation has exempted marriage certificates, including certificates of no impediment and marital status, from the apostille requirement within the European Union. Ask the office abroad whether it also needs a translation; the Standesamt Dortmund offers a translation aid for 15 euros.
