Applying to the school yourself
The way without us, step by step
Without us, you apply directly to your school. The Robert-Bosch-Berufskolleg's form shows how it works:
- Fill in the application: name, date and place of birth, address, phone, last class, class teacher, course, qualification and period at the school.
- Tick the type of certificate: final certificate, half-year or annual report with school year, or leaving certificate without qualification.
- Choose delivery: by post to your address, collection in person with ID, or collection by an authorised person with power of attorney and ID copy.
- Pay in advance: 7.50 euros, plus 1.80 euros postage if sent, 9.30 euros in total. Preparation can take up to two weeks.
- Other Dortmund schools have their own forms and fees. Ask your school's office.

The Robert-Bosch-Berufskolleg publishes an example with figures: 7.50 euros in advance, 9.30 euros with postage, processing up to two weeks. This does not automatically apply to other schools. Köln has its own city page for certificates of closed schools; in Düsseldorf and Essen the school also issues the copy.
School supervision in Dortmund is split: the Schulamt für die Stadt Dortmund supervises primary schools and, academically, Haupt- and special needs schools. The Bezirksregierung Arnsberg supervises Realschulen, grammar schools, comprehensive schools and vocational colleges. Neither page says whether the supervisory body helps if a school has closed.
If you need the certificate abroad, further steps are added. The Bezirksregierung Arnsberg requires a copy officially certified by the school and signed by the head, then pre-certification by its Dezernat 48, and only then the apostille.

Lost my certificate: where do I get a replacement?
From the school that issued the certificate. In Dortmund there is no central city office for this. The Robert-Bosch-Berufskolleg, for example, requires a written application with your details, qualification and type of certificate, and sends the copy by post or hands it over on collection.
How much does a certificate copy cost?
Each school sets this itself. The Robert-Bosch-Berufskolleg in Dortmund states 7.50 euros in advance, plus 1.80 euros postage if sent, 9.30 euros in total. Other schools may charge other amounts. With us the application costs 49.90 euros, plus the school's fee.
I need the certificate urgently. What can I do?
Ask your school's office how long it takes. At the Robert-Bosch-Berufskolleg preparation can take up to two weeks; the form mentions no express processing. Collecting in person with ID saves the postal time. It is not faster through us than at the school.
Do I still need my certificate at all?
We do not assess that; the office requesting the certificate decides, e.g. an employer, a university or an authority abroad. For use abroad, the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg requires an officially certified copy from the school and pre-certification before the apostille.
My school has closed. Who can help?
There is no city of Dortmund page on this. School supervision lies with the Schulamt für die Stadt Dortmund for primary, Haupt- and special needs schools and with the Bezirksregierung Arnsberg for Realschulen, grammar schools, comprehensive schools and vocational colleges. Whether these offices issue copies is not stated there; ask them.
