Married in Münster, living elsewhere
What counts is the place of marriage, not the place of residence
Civil status registers are kept where the event took place. Someone who married in Münster but lives in Hamm or Osnabrück still orders the marriage certificate from the Münster registry office. Conversely, the Münster registry office cannot help if the wedding was in another city.
More about Münster (2)Show less
The registry office keeps the marriage registers of the last 80 years. Older marriages, including those from the registry offices of places incorporated in 1975, are in registers handed over to the Stadtarchiv Münster. For registered civil partnerships there are certificates from registers since 2001.
For use abroad, the multilingual marriage certificate may be enough. Under the Vienna CIEC Convention of 1976 it is valid without apostille in the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Turkey, among others. Within the EU, Regulation 2016/1191 also exempts certain documents; the Bezirksregierung Münster gives details.
Questions about the Münster marriage certificate
How much does a marriage certificate cost in Münster?
The Münster registry office charges 15 euros for a marriage certificate and 9 euros for each further copy you order at the same time. You pay the same for a certified extract from the marriage register. At Behördenfix it costs 39 euros, city fee included.
Where do I get a marriage certificate if we married in Münster?
From the Münster registry office: certificates always come from the office that recorded the marriage. Where you live now does not matter. The certificate office is in Stadthaus 1 at Klemensstraße 10. You order online, in writing or in person by appointment. For written orders you transfer the fee directly to the registry office, which gives you its bank details.
How far back do the marriage registers in Münster go?
The Münster registry office issues marriage certificates from marriage registers of the last 80 years. If the marriage was longer ago, contact the Stadtarchiv Münster, which took over the older registers. The older registers of the registry offices incorporated into Münster in 1975 are there too.
Who may request a marriage certificate in Münster?
Under § 62 of the Personenstandsgesetz, the spouses themselves, their ancestors such as the parents, and their descendants. Other relatives such as siblings, uncles or aunts must credibly show a legal interest. Anyone outside the entitled group submits a written power of attorney; this is how Behördenfix orders too.
Do I need an apostille on the marriage certificate for the Netherlands?
Not if you use the multilingual marriage certificate on the CIEC model. According to the Bezirksregierung Münster, the Netherlands is a contracting state of the Vienna Convention of 1976, where these certificates are exempt from any formality. Within the EU, Regulation 2016/1191 also exempts marriage certificates from the apostille. For other states of the Hague Convention, the Bezirksregierung Münster issues the apostille.
