Applying yourself at the trade registration office
The way without us, step by step
Responsible is the trade registration office in the Ordnungsamt of the city of Münster, Stadthaus 1, Klemensstraße 10, 48143 Münster, room 7.039. It is divided by initial letter.

Card payment, appointment and initial letters
The Gewerbeschein is the receipt with which the authority confirms receipt of your trade notification under § 15 of the Gewerbeordnung, by law within three days. If it is lost, Münster issues a replacement certificate for 15 euros. If something about the business has changed, such as the location, activity or name, a change of registration must be notified instead; for sole traders it costs 26 euros per person.

The trade registration office on the 7th floor of Stadthaus 1 does not take cash. Payment is by bank or EC card or later via a fee notice. You can only visit with an appointment, and responsibility depends on the initial letter: three case-handling teams for A to G, H to O and P to Z.
For context, the city's other fees: registration or change of registration costs 26 euros per person for sole traders and GbR, 33 euros for legal entities and 13 euros for each further managing person. Deregistration is free of charge. Since 1 November 2025, the new authority automatically deregisters you when you move to another city.

Can I pay cash at the Ordnungsamt Münster?
No. The trade registration office states explicitly that payment is possible only by bank or EC card or by fee notice and that cash payment is not possible. This applies to registrations, changes and deregistrations as well as to replacement certificates. So bring a card to your appointment.
What is the Gewerbeschein anyway?
Colloquially, the receipt for your trade notification. Under § 15 paragraph 1 of the Gewerbeordnung the authority confirms receipt of the notification within three days. It is not a permit; trades requiring a permit need a separate licence as well. If someone runs such a trade without a licence, the authority can prohibit its continuation under § 15 paragraph 2.
Do I have to deregister my trade in Münster when I move?
Not any more when the business moves to another city. Since 1 November 2025, according to the city of Münster, you no longer have to deregister with the previous authority; deregistration is handled automatically with the registration at the new location and sent to you. If you give up the trade completely, deregister it free of charge.
