Hamburg: parents and children yes, siblings no
Who gets the marriage certificate
In Hamburg, the city says, the spouses themselves, their parents and their children may apply if they are at least 16 years old. Siblings are not on Hamburg's list for the marriage certificate. Others, including aunts and uncles, need a legal interest, e.g. a letter from the probate court, a judgment or an enforceable title.
More about Hamburg (2)Show less
If the marriage was recorded at a Hamburg registry office from 2009, each of the seven registry offices issues further certificates, with the note under § 67 paragraph 3 Personenstandsgesetz. Since 2009 the registers have been kept electronically. After 80 years the books go to the Staatsarchiv.
If the marriage took place abroad, there is at first no Hamburg marriage certificate: the marriage must first be re-registered in Germany. If details change, e.g. by divorce or a new name, the registry office updates the entry; a new certificate is issued on request.
