Certified translation of documents – authorised translators
A certified translation (beglaubigte Übersetzung) is made by a translator authorised by a court or publicly appointed, commonly called a sworn translator. She confirms with her signature that the translation is correct and complete. With us a standard document of up to one page costs 47 euros, with apostille 112 euros.

Hiring a translator yourself
The way without us, step by step
Without us, you hire a translator directly. This is how the judiciary and the Federal Foreign Office describe it:
- Search the interpreter and translator database of the state justice administrations by language and place. It lists the generally sworn, publicly appointed or authorised persons of all federal states.
- Send the document or a copy and name the target language. If no original was available, the certification note must say so (§ 34 JustG NRW).
- If the other country needs an apostille for the translation, the regional court where the translator's signature is on file confirms this signature. The regional courts of Essen and Duisburg charge 25 euros per document for this.
- Costs compared: with us you pay 47 euros per standard document up to one page, 112 euros with apostille, 137 euros with two apostilles. For longer documents we quote the price after seeing them.
What we need
- Scan or photo of the document, clearly legible and complete.
- The language from which and into which it is translated.

- For an apostille: the original, if the office requires it.
- For names in another script: the spelling from your passport.
Sworn, authorised, publicly appointed
The federal states name the same role differently: generally sworn, publicly appointed or generally authorised. This is how the database of the state justice administrations lists them.
All details (1)Show less
In North Rhine-Westphalia translators are authorised (§ 33 JustG NRW), by the president of the higher regional court. The authorisation includes the right to certify correctness and completeness; anyone calling themselves so without it commits an administrative offence.
When does our help make sense?
You do not need it if you find an authorised translator for your language in the states' database and hire her directly. That works without an intermediary.
It can help if you need translation and apostille together or do not know which office confirms what. The translation is made by an authorised partner translator; we coordinate the order.
What we do not do: we do not translate ourselves, we do not predict whether an office abroad will accept the translation, and we promise no delivery time.
Questions about certified translation
How much does a certified translation cost?
With us 47 euros per standard document up to one page, such as a birth certificate, driving licence or diploma. With apostille the translation costs 112 euros. For longer documents we quote the price after seeing them. If you do not submit a translation an authority has asked for, it can obtain one itself at your expense (§ 23(2) VwVfG).
Sworn or authorised: what is the difference?
It is the same role under different names in the federal states. In NRW translators are called authorised; the authorisation is granted by the president of the higher regional court (§§ 33, 36 JustG NRW). Other states appoint publicly or swear in generally. For courts such a translation counts as correct and complete if the translator certifies this (§ 142(3) ZPO).
Is the translation available online as a PDF?
You can place the order online with a scan. Under § 34 JustG NRW the certification can also be given in electronic form under § 126a BGB, i.e. with a qualified electronic signature. Whether an office accepts such a file is its own decision; ask there first. Otherwise you receive the signed translation on paper.
Do I need a translation for my driving licence?
For driving, § 29 FeV requires, for non-German licences from countries outside the EU and EEA, a translation by an automobile club of the issuing country or by a body designated by the Federal Ministry of Transport. For conversion, Duisburg names a translation with classification, for example by sworn translators; there it is not needed for class B if a pictogram shows the class.
Apostille first or translation first?
There is no apostille on the translation itself, says the Federal Foreign Office, because it is not a public document. The apostille for the German document is issued by the office matching the issuer, such as the Bezirksregierung. For the translation, the regional court confirms the translator's signature; an apostille then goes on this confirmation. The office in the destination country says what it requires. In our 112-euro package you choose what the apostille goes on; if the country requires both, the second costs 25 euros.
Will the translation be recognised abroad?
That depends on the law of the country where the translation is used, writes the Federal Foreign Office. In Germany, translations by publicly sworn or recognised translators are regularly accepted. Whether a translation made abroad is sufficient is decided by the German authority at its discretion. So ask in advance at the office requiring the translation.
