Applying yourself
The way without us, step by step
If you apply yourself, first find out who issued the document. That decides whether the Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf or the Landgericht Wuppertal certifies it.
- Documents of the city of Wuppertal: by post to Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf, Dezernat 21, attn. Frau Hermen, Postfach 300865, 40408 Düsseldorf, with the application form of 16.01.2024 and the destination country. Until further notice there are no office hours. The document comes back with a fee invoice, which you pay by transfer.
- Notarial and court documents from the Landgericht district: at the office of the President of the Landgericht, Eiland 1, 42103 Wuppertal, phone 0202 498 1001 or 1002, with the form for written applications. The administration is in the Justizzentrum opposite.
- Costs compared: the Bezirksregierung charges 25 to 40 euros for private use, plus 10 euros postage abroad. The Landgericht charges 25 euros per document. With us it is 129 euros including all these fees. We are not an authority, and the offices' processing time stays the same.

One week at the Eiland, ten weeks in Düsseldorf
About one week at the Eiland, ten weeks in Düsseldorf
In Wuppertal the issuer decides the speed. For notarial, court and translation documents, the Landgericht Wuppertal states a processing time of about one week. For the city's birth, marriage or registration documents the Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf is responsible; it currently states eight to ten weeks («derzeit 8 bis 10 Wochen»).
More about Wuppertal (2)Show less
The Landgericht district is larger than the city: Erkrath, Haan, Heiligenhaus, Mettmann, Remscheid, Solingen, Velbert, Wülfrath and Wuppertal. A notary from Solingen or Velbert therefore also goes via the Landgericht at the Eiland. Electronic commercial register extracts first need an official stamp, original signature and the pre-certification (Vorbeglaubigung) by the management of the Amtsgericht.
The Bezirksregierung gives neither receipt confirmations nor status information. Registry documents should not be older than six months, otherwise the registry office issues them again. For 20 states, including Iraq, Iran, Syria and the United Arab Emirates, a final certification at the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs in Brandenburg an der Havel follows.
Questions about the apostille in Wuppertal
Who issues an apostille in Wuppertal?
That depends on the document. Documents of the city of Wuppertal, such as birth certificates, proof of address or school certificates, are certified by the Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf. Documents of notaries and courts from the Landgericht district and translations by authorised translators are certified by the President of the Landgericht Wuppertal. Private documents such as a power of attorney go first to a notary, then to the Landgericht.
How long does an apostille take in Wuppertal?
At the Landgericht Wuppertal the processing time is about one week by its own account. The Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf currently states eight to ten weeks («derzeit 8 bis 10 Wochen»), does not confirm receipt and answers no status queries. Through us the offices' times are the same, plus postage.
What does an apostille cost in Wuppertal?
At the Landgericht 25 euros per document under number 1310 of the cost schedule of the Justizverwaltungskostengesetz. At the Bezirksregierung 25 to 40 euros for private use and 60 to 75 euros for businesses, plus 10 euros postage abroad. At Behördenfix 129 euros for a document for private use, all fees included.
Can I collect the apostille in Düsseldorf in person?
Not at the moment. The Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf writes that there are no office hours until further notice and applications are accepted in writing only. By phone it is available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 12. The certified document comes back by post with a fee invoice, to be paid by the due date.
Does a document from Wuppertal need an apostille at all?
Not always. Multilingual civil status documents following the CIEC model are exempt in the member states, e.g. Italy, Poland or Turkey. Within the EU, Regulation 2016/1191 applies to certain public documents. For states outside the Hague Convention there is a certification instead of the apostille, for 20 states also a final certification.
