Getting the apostille in Munich yourself
The way without us, step by step
For documents of a Bavarian municipality or state authority, the apostille is issued by the government of the district (Regierung) where the document was issued. For Munich documents that is the Regierung von Oberbayern. You collect the apostille there yourself or send the document by post.
- In person: Maximilianstraße 39, 80538 München, Monday to Thursday 9 to 12 hrs, Tuesday and Wednesday also 13 to 15 hrs, Friday 9 to 10:45 hrs. Waiting numbers stop 15 minutes before closing; payment in cash or by card.
- By post: original with the fully completed and signed application form to Regierung von Oberbayern, SG 11 – Beglaubigungsstelle, 80534 München. Expect approx. two weeks including postage; status enquiries delay processing.
- Court documents: for documents of the Amtsgericht München, e.g. divorce decrees or certificates of inheritance, its president is responsible; an engrossment or certified copy, copies are not enough. Notary deeds and translations are certified by the Landgericht München I, also with an online appointment.
- Costs compared: about 20 euros per document at the Regierung, 25 euros at the Amtsgericht. With us 129 euros including this fee. Going to Maximilianstraße yourself is cheaper. We are not an authority and get no faster appointment.

Bavaria: the district government, not the city
In Bavaria the apostille is not issued by the city but by the government of the district where the document was created; for Munich civil status certificates, registration certificates and school reports, the Regierung von Oberbayern. The Standesamt München itself refers there; for documents from other Bavarian districts their own Regierung is responsible.
More about Munich (2)Show less
The Regierung's fee is set within a range; the BayernPortal states about 20 euros per document. Cadastral extracts and certificates of nationality are accepted by post only, cadastral extracts also only with proof from the destination country. For states outside the Hague Convention there is no apostille but a pre-certification for legalisation.
In the judiciary, what counts is which court issued the document. The Amtsgericht München is only responsible for its own documents and charges 25 euros; in estate matters it can currently take up to two months. For applications by post the Landgericht München I first sends an invoice by e-mail and only processes after payment.
