Without us: Landgericht or Bezirksregierung

The way without us, step by step

Without us, you apply yourself. Which office depends on who issued the document:

  • Landgericht Bonn for notarial documents from the district, judgments, orders and certificates of inheritance of the Landgericht and the local courts Bonn, Euskirchen, Königswinter, Rheinbach, Siegburg and Waldbröl, and for translations by authorised translators from the district: hand in the documents at the information desk, no appointment. State the destination country in writing. Phone 8:30 to 12: 0228 702 1114, 1119 or 1117.
  • For decisions of the Amtsgericht Bonn, the Landgericht needs the original with the note of finality. An application by e-mail is therefore not possible.
  • Documents of the City of Bonn, e.g. birth or marriage certificates: by post with the application form to Bezirksregierung Köln, Dezernat 21/Apostille, Zeughausstraße 2-10, 50667 Köln, with your address and the destination country. The document comes back with a fee invoice. In person only on Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment, arranged by e-mail; payment is then in cash.
  • Costs compared: Landgericht 25 euros, Bezirksregierung 25 to 50 euros. With us 129 euros for one document for private use, including all fees, also any required pre-certification. We are not an authority; we identify the office, obtain any pre-certification and submit.

Pre-certification (Vorbeglaubigung) at the Stadthaus

First the Stadthaus, then Köln

For documents of the City of Bonn, the Bezirksregierung Köln issues the apostille. For many city documents, however, it first requires a pre-certification (Vorbeglaubigung) by the city: Bonn confirms that an authorised person signed and sealed the document. Documents of registry officers are exempt.

More about Bonn (2)

The pre-certification is done by the personnel and organisation office, Amt 10-31, in the Stadthaus, Berliner Platz 2, floor 10 A. You arrange an appointment by phone or e-mail, or send the document to Bundesstadt Bonn, Amt 10-31, 53103 Bonn. It is returned by post to your registered address. The city names no fee there.

The Landgericht Bonn, by contrast, is responsible for notaries, courts and authorised translators from its district. It charges 25 euros, expects up to two weeks and states explicitly that no appointment is needed.

Questions about the apostille in Bonn

Where do I get an apostille in Bonn?

That depends on the issuer. For documents of the City of Bonn, for example from the registry office, the Bezirksregierung Köln is responsible. Notarial documents from the court district, court decisions, certificates of inheritance and translations by authorised translators from the district are certified by the president of the Landgericht Bonn at Wilhelmstraße 21.

Do Bonn documents need a pre-certification?

Many city documents do, before the Bezirksregierung Köln issues the apostille. Responsible is office 10-31 of the City of Bonn in the Stadthaus, by appointment or by post. Registry office documents, i.e. birth, marriage and death certificates, need no pre-certification (Vorbeglaubigung). If you order through us, we handle this step.

Do I need an appointment at the Landgericht Bonn?

No. The Landgericht Bonn states explicitly that no appointment is needed. If you come in person, first hand in the documents at the information desk. In a written application, name the country the apostille is needed for. The court answers questions by phone on working days from 8:30 to 12.

How long does an apostille take in Bonn?

At the Landgericht Bonn up to two weeks. The Bezirksregierung Köln states no duration for returns within Germany, and up to eight weeks for shipping abroad. If a pre-certification by the city is added, the process is longer by this step; the city states no duration for it.

What does an apostille cost in Bonn?

At the Landgericht Bonn 25 euros per apostille or legalisation. The Bezirksregierung Köln charges 25 to 50 euros for private purposes, 10 euros for each further identical copy, 40 to 70 euros for commercial use. With us an apostille for one document for private use costs 129 euros including all fees, also a pre-certification by the city.

Who issues the apostille for a certificate of conduct?

Neither the Landgericht Bonn nor the Bezirksregierung Köln. According to the Landgericht, the Bundesamt für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten is responsible for certificates of conduct, even though the Bundesamt für Justiz is based in Bonn. We do not handle this case on this page; the notes of the Bundesamt für Justiz apply.
