Applying yourself at the housing benefit office

The way without us, step by step

You can apply for Wohngeld without us. The federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia describe this way:

  • The housing benefit office of your municipality, town or district is responsible. The federal states offer the application online; the Federal Building Ministry links to their information pages.
  • In North Rhine-Westphalia you calculate your Wohngeld without obligation on wohngeldrechner.nrw.de, then apply online directly, for every municipality in the state, and upload your proofs.
  • On paper you choose the right application: Mietzuschuss as a tenant, Lastenzuschuss as the owner of the home you live in. Fill it in, sign it, enclose copies of the proofs and send it to the housing benefit office.
  • Continuation and increase applications as well as change notifications also go through the online procedure in NRW.
  • Costs compared: the procedure at the housing benefit office is free of charge under § 64 SGB X. With us you pay 39 euros for filling in the form with your details. You sign, and we send the signed application by post to the housing benefit office.
  • We are not an authority. Only the housing benefit office decides whether and how much Wohngeld is paid.

The documents you need

  • The right application: Mietzuschuss or Lastenzuschuss.
  • Copies of proof of income of all household members.
More documents (3)
  • Details of the rent or costs. In NRW there is the form «Angaben des Vermieters zum Wohnraum» (landlord's details on the home) for this, which your landlord fills in.
  • For income from work in NRW: the earnings certificate that your employer fills in.
  • After a move: a new application for the new home.

Good to know

The amount also depends on where you live

How much rent counts for Wohngeld depends on the household size and the rent level (Mietenstufe) of your municipality.

All details (2)

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia gives examples: for a household of one person, depending on the rent level, at most 380.20 to 634.20 euros of rent a month are taken into account, including the climate component; for four people 642.40 to 1,069.40 euros. For heating costs a flat 110.40 euros are added for one person and 197.80 euros for four people. As the absolute income limit from 1 January 2025, NRW names 1,593 euros a month for single people and 3,633 euros for four people. What counts is the gross rent without heating and hot water.

According to the federal government, people on Bürgergeld, social assistance or basic income support usually get no Wohngeld, because that benefit already covers housing costs. The NRW information sheet then advises contacting the housing benefit office.

When does help with the form make sense?

You do not need it if your state offers an online application and you have your proofs ready digitally. In NRW the online application guides you step by step through the procedure, and the procedure costs nothing.

It can help if you use the paper application, if several people with their own income share the household, or if German forms are hard to understand. We transfer your details completely into the right application, you check and sign, and we send it to the office.

What we do not do: we do not calculate Wohngeld, we do not predict whether you will get it, and you submit the online application yourself. A first orientation is given by the federal Wohngeld-Plus calculator; the housing benefit office makes the binding decision.

Questions about Wohngeld

Where do I submit the Wohngeld application?

At the housing benefit office of the municipality, town or district where you live. The federal states offer the application online. In North Rhine-Westphalia this works for every municipality via the state's Wohngeld calculator: first calculate without obligation, then apply online directly and upload the proofs.

From when is Wohngeld paid?

Under § 25 of the Housing Benefit Act (WoGG), the approval period begins on the first day of the month in which you submitted the Wohngeld application. If the conditions are only met later, it begins on the first day of that later month. For months before the month of application the law usually provides no payment.

Which documents do I need for Wohngeld?

The right application for Mietzuschuss or Lastenzuschuss and copies of your proofs. In NRW the state also provides two forms: the earnings certificate, which the employer fills in, and the landlord's details on the home. Wohngeld depends on the income of all household members.

Can I get Wohngeld if I receive Bürgergeld?

According to the Federal Building Ministry, people whose housing costs are already covered by another benefit usually get no Wohngeld. This includes Bürgergeld, social assistance and basic income support. The NRW information sheet then advises contacting your housing benefit office for advice.

For how long is Wohngeld approved?

Usually for twelve months. The office can shorten the period or, if circumstances are likely to stay the same, extend it to up to 24 months. Then you submit a continuation application. One that arrives more than two months before the end only counts from the first day of the second month before the end.

What must I report to the housing benefit office?

Report without delay if fewer people live in the household, the rent falls by more than 15 percent or income rises by more than 15 percent. If the rent rises by more than 10 percent, income falls by more than 10 percent or someone joins the household, you can apply for an increase.
