Applying for a pension (Rente): how the application reaches the pension insurance

Applying for your pension yourself
The way without us, step by step
You can apply for your pension without us, and the pension insurance helps free of charge. It names these ways:
- Online: the Deutsche Rentenversicherung's eAntrag works without registration; you only need your insurance number. You can save drafts and upload proofs. Online, the pension insurance usually does not ask for the tax ID or a copy of your ID.
- On paper: form R0100 «Antrag auf Versichertenrente» has 22 pages. You fill it in, sign it and hand it in or send it to your pension insurance. The letterhead of your pension information shows which provider is responsible.
- With an appointment: at its information and advice centres the pension insurance fills in the application with you and forwards it electronically. Volunteer insurance advisers (Versichertenberater, Versichertenälteste) also take applications after working hours. Depending on the region, the municipality or insurance office can help too. The free service line is 0800 1000 4800.
- If your application reaches another social authority, such as the employment agency or the health insurer, that date of receipt counts, according to the pension insurance.
- Costs compared: the pension insurance charges 0 euros, as § 64 SGB X states. With us you pay 29 euros for filling in and sending.
The details and documents you need
- Pension insurance number.
- Copy of your ID card or passport.
More documents (6)Show less
- Details of health and long-term care insurance; the application asks for the health insurer for the pensioners' health insurance registration (form R0810).
- Tax ID and IBAN with BIC.
- Birth certificates of your children, also for fathers, because of the care insurance contribution.
- Proof of training, unemployment or illness still missing from your insurance record.
- For the old-age pension for severely disabled people: disability card or official decision.
- If we apply: your written power of attorney. It only covers sending; all letters from the pension insurance go to you.
Four old-age pensions, one form
The standard old-age pension under § 35 SGB VI requires the standard retirement age and at least five years of insurance. Under § 235 SGB VI that age is 66 years and 4 months for people born in 1960, 66 and 6 for 1961, 66 and 8 for 1962, 66 and 10 months for 1963 and 67 years from 1964.
All details (2)Show less
«Rente mit 63» (early retirement) usually means two pension types. The old-age pension for long-term insured people under § 36 SGB VI requires 35 years of insurance and is possible early from 63; for each month before the standard age the access factor falls by 0.003 under § 77 SGB VI. The old-age pension for especially long-term insured people under § 38 SGB VI requires 45 years and starts at 65 from birth year 1964 (born 1963: 64 and 10 months, § 236b SGB VI).
These three and the old-age pension for severely disabled people use the same form R0100. We fill it in for any of the four; you choose the pension type yourself based on your pension statement, we only tick it. We do not judge whether your years are enough or which type suits you better.
When does help with the pension application make sense?
You do not need it if you have your insurance number at hand and can manage the eAntrag, or if you can attend an appointment at the pension insurance. They help you there free of charge and neutrally.
It can help if you do not want to wait for an appointment, if a 22-page German form is hard to understand for you, or if relatives are to handle the application for you. You give us your details, we enter them in the application, you sign, we send it.
What we do not do: we do not calculate pensions and give no advice on the amount, start or type of pension. We do not clear up gaps in your insurance record or represent you in an objection. Only the pension insurance decides, in the pension decision.
Questions about the pension application
How far in advance must I apply for my pension?
The pension insurance advises about three months before the desired start, so employers and health insurers can send their details in time. § 99 SGB VI sets a hard deadline: if the application arrives by the end of the third calendar month after the month in which all conditions are met, the pension still starts on time. If it comes later, the pension only starts from the month of application.
Which documents do I need for the pension application?
For every pension application the pension insurance names the insurance number, a copy of your ID if needed, details of health and care insurance, the tax ID if needed, and IBAN and BIC. Depending on the case, add your children's birth certificates and proof of training and of periods still missing from your insurance record. If someone else applies, they need a written power of attorney.
Can I apply for my pension online?
Yes. The eAntrag on the Deutsche Rentenversicherung website needs no registration, only your insurance number. You can save the application and upload proofs digitally. According to the pension insurance, fewer details are needed online than on paper, and tax ID and ID copy are usually not required. For other matters there is the customer portal with the online ID function.
Which form do I need for the pension application?
The form is called R0100 «Antrag auf Versichertenrente». It has 22 pages and covers the standard old-age pension, the pensions for long-term and especially long-term insured people, the pension for severely disabled people and the reduced earning capacity pension. Depending on the case it requires further forms, such as R0810 for pensioners' health insurance or V forms for periods abroad.
Can I apply for a pension at 63?
From 63 only the old-age pension for long-term insured people is possible, with 35 years of insurance and a permanently lower pension: 0.3 percent for each month before the standard age (§ 77 SGB VI). Without a deduction there is the pension for especially long-term insured people after 45 years, at 64 years and 10 months for people born in 1963, at 65 from 1964. We fill in both applications if you have chosen the pension type yourself.
How long does processing the pension application take?
The pension insurance names no fixed processing time on its application pages. It advises applying three months ahead and offers to project earnings or social benefits for up to three months before the pension starts; actually higher income can then no longer be taken into account later. If periods are still missing from your insurance account, get in touch earlier so the account is complete before the pension starts.
